Per complaint filed by Süleyman Durgut’s family to the İdil Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, 39-year-old Süleyman Durgut was an imam who lived and also worked as a shopkeeper in the Cizre district of Şırnak. Prior to his disappearance, Süleyman Durgut had been placed under custody multiple times and subjected to heavy torture. On the morning of 14th July 1994, he was taken by two JİTEM members from his house and driven off in a white Toros car. The following morning, his dead body was found on the Cizre-İdil road.
In October 2014, the İdil Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office dismissed the case due to statute of limitations. The family appealed the decision citing a previous ruling by the Van Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office

Following the discovery of Süleyman Durgut’s dead body, the İdil Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an initial investigation (file no.1994/121), which was merged with a new investigation (file no.2012/461) initiated at Süleyman Durgut’s family’s request in 2009. During the initial investigation, the Prosecutor’s Office had not taken the testimony of family members and ballistics examination of bullets found in Süleyman Durgut’s body had not been fully performed. In 2012, it was discovered that one of the men that the family reported as a suspect (known as “C”) in the murder was being investigated for similar crimes by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office (file no.2009/906). In October 2014, the İdil Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office dismissed the case due to statute of limitations. The family appealed the decision citing a previous ruling by the Van Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office (file no.1997/1256)
