Per investigation file on Ahmet Berek’s disappearance and subsequent death, he was living in Damlarca village of Şırnak’s Güçlükonak district. He was married and had 8 children. In January 1993, he was taken into custody by a Special Operations Team. His relatives, who later informed his immediate family, witnessed the incident. When asked by the family, the village guards told them not to worry and that he would be released soon.

Three weeks later, his dead body was discovered behind the Kerem Hotel in Cizre and was identified by a relative. He was buried in the cemetery of Cizre Municipality.

It is not known whether an autopsy was conducted or whether there was an investigation into his disappearance, however, in official records his date of death appears as 1st March 2005. After the burial of Ahmet, his family received a document from the Public Prosecutor, stating that Ahmet was released. His family could not apply to any state institutions out of fear.

Years later in 2009, his son Mehmet Nuri Berek filed a petition and asked the Cizre Public Prosecutor’s office to take witness accounts of the village guards who claimed that his father would return.
