- Event description
Per Human Rights Foundation of Turkey’s (TİHV) 2003 Turkey Human Rights Report and press statement released by Cumartesi İnsanları on 2nd October 2010, Beşir Sayın (33), Haydar Yılmaz (45), Yusuf Aktaş (Ertaş) (70) and Mehmet Emin Yılmaz (78) went up to the Faraşin Plateau after taking the necessary permissions from the civilian and military authorities. On the same day, the Hakkari Alpine Commando Unit launched an operation in the same area. When Beşir Sayın’s brother went to the Geçitli Gnedarmerie Station, he saw the horses that the men were riding on that day in front of the station; however, he was told that the men had not been seen there. Witnesses claimed to have seen the men being transferred to the station in a helicopter by soldiers after being taken into custody during the military operation. The investigation launched by the Beytüşşebap Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office was dismissed on the grounds that no military operation had taken place and the Commander of the Geçitli Gendarmerie Station was not assigned to that duty on the said date. The appeal filed by the family was also denied.
