- Event description
Per Yakay-Der’s book on enforced disappearances and unresolved murders “Sımsıcaktı Elleri” (How snug were their hands) and news article published by Demokrat Haber on 5th January 2013, Hüseyin Eser was married with ten children. He was born in Mardin’s Midyat district. On 19th December 1992 Hüseyin Eser closed his shop, as did other shop owners because of the clashes in the area and left for his home. On the road, he was taken into custody by soldiers and village guards. Hüseyin Eser was taken to the Midyat District Police Station with thirty fellow villagers.
Halil, a friend of the family, who was detained at the same police station with Hüseyin, later told the Eser family that Hüseyin Eser was taken to a basement floor used by the village guards as an interrogation center. The family friend later refused to give an official testimony out of fear.
Hüseyin Eser’s dead body was found the following day. He had been shot to death. After the incident, Eser family moved to Dargeçit district of Mardin and then to Istanbul.
In the summary proceeding prepared by the Public Prosecutor upon the discovery of Hüseyin Eser’s death body on 20th December 1992, the suspects of the incident were defined as “unidentified members of the PKK terrorist organization.” The Office of the Public Prosecutor opened an investigation into Hüseyin Eser’s murder, however, for years, there was no progress in the judicial process. On 20th December 2012 the Office of Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor ruled to close the investigation due to statute of limitations. On 25th August 2015 Hüseyin Eser’s children appealed the decision. Hafıza Merkezi does not hold any further information.
