Per friendly settlement decision reached at the European Human Rights Court on 2nd October 2003, while forty-three-year-old İlyas Eren was sitting at a coffeehouse in Diyarbakır on 11th March 1997, he was approached by two plainclothes police officers for an ID check and forced inside a white car.
Ilyas Eren has not been seen or heard from, nor have his bodily remains been located.
The written criminal complaint that his brother wanted to file with the Diyarbakır Prosecutor’s Office was turned down until 17th March 1997. During the investigation, the police force denied placing him under custody.
In 2003, the Eren family reached a friendly settlement at the ECHR.
In 2006, in his widely mediatized confessions, a former JİTEM member claimed that Ilyas Eren had been executed by a group led by a task commander stationed at the Diyarbakır Saraykapı Central District Gendarmerie Command.

Per friendly settlement decision reached at the European Human Rights Court on 2nd October 2003, the written criminal complaint that Ilyas Eren’s brother wanted to file with the Diyarbakır Prosecutor’s Office about his abduction on 11th March 1997 by plainclothes police officers in Diyarbakır was turned down until 17th March 1997. During the investigation (file no.1997-7410), the police force denied placing him under custody. In 2002, the police interviewed six witnesses.
