Per Turkey Human Rights Foundation’s report for year 1994 and Amnesty International’s press release from June 1994; Nimet Barut, the fifty-seven-year-old mukhtar of Ağıllı village in Diyarbakır’s Kulp district. During a raid on the village on 6th May 1994, he requested that villagers be allowed to perform the morning prayer, angering some of the soldiers. Later, when he objected to soldiers, who were inflicting physical violence on women, he was beaten in front of the whole village and taken away by the soldiers. His lifeless body was discovered on 12th May 1994. It is not known whether a legal process was initiated for his death.
