Per Yakay-Der records and İHD’s report on human rights abuses by village guards, Remo Tuğuç and his family had to move from Mardin’s village Yurtderi to Mardin’s Kızıltepe district after their house was burnt down by security forces due to their refusal to serve as village guards. On 8th July 1994, he was placed under custody by two plainclothes policemen and two village guards as he was conversing with a group of men in front of a store. Fifteen days later, his family was informed that his dead body had been found. He was shot in the head and the chest with multiple bullets. No official investigation has been held about his death.
