- Event description
Per press statement released by Cumartesi İnsanları during their demonstration on 21st January 2015 and Yakay-Der’s book “Sımsıcaktı Elleri” (How snug were their hands), 1976-born Mehmet Zafer Demirkıran had an interest in politics and would join demonstrations. After returning to his native city of Diyarbakır from İstanbul, where he had briefly worked, he came across an old friend of his. Mehmet avoided this old friend because Mehmet knew that he had joined JİTEM after leaving the PKK. Shortly later, on 12th September 1995, he was taken into custody by 6 plainclothes police officers who came to his house at around 10 pm. When his family searched for Mehmet Zafer Demirkıran, the authorities denied placing him into custody and his family have not heard from him since then nor have his bodily remains been found.
