- Event description
Per written request submitted to the İzmir Public Chief Prosecutor’s Office by Nurettin Tolk’s family; in March 1995, police were called when his son B.T. had a quarrel with the mukhtar of their neighbourhood at the latter’s office in Kadifekale, İzmir. B.T. left the office, before the police arrived and went off to spend the following days at his friends’ place. Shortly later, he learned that his father had been placed under custody by the police. When his father did not return home despite the end of the legal time limit for detention, with the help of his attorney, he began to search for him. The Kadifekale Police Station claimed that Nurettin Toluk had been found lying on the street in a drunken stupor and taken to the hospital, after which nobody knew what he did. Through his son’s efforts, in December 1995, it was discovered that Nurettin Toluk had been brought to the Ege University Hospital by police officers and had been buried in a pauper’s grave afterwards. The official records showed that he had been in a train accident; however, per medical records, his hands were tied when the police admitted him to the hospital in a plastic bag. İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office ruled that police officers had not been at fault (decision no.1996/7446)
