- Event description
Per petitions lodged by the families at the prosecutor’s office and press statement released by Cumartesi İnsanları on 27th July 2013, Mehmet Dansık and Yusuf Kalendaroğlu were relatives and were both living in the Kavallı village of Silopi. The latter was the village mukhtar. Despite pressure from state authorities, nobody in the village accepted to become a village guard.
After shopping in Silopi, Yusuf joined Ahmet Dansık and his son Mehmet Dansık in their car to go back home. According to eye witnesses, they were stopped at the Botaş Gendarmerie Station Command and then taken inside. They have not been heard from or seen since then, nor have their bodily remains ever found.
When his father did not come back home, Yusuf Kalenderoğlu’s son searched for him at the District Governorship, Silopi Police Headquaters and Gendarmerie Command. The family submitted a petition at the Office of the Silopi Chief Public Prosecutor but the Public Prosecutor did not launch an investigation.
Years later, the family received a phone call and was informed that the car belonging to Dansık family was in a garage in Urfa. Mehmet Dansık’s son went there and found the car. He was told that the car had been brought there by the police 7-8 years ago. He went to the Police Station to inquire about the car but police officers told him that they did not know anything about it.
Ahmet Dansık, Mehmet Dansık and Yusuf Kalenderoğlu’s disappearances are mentioned in two investigations conducted by the offices of Diyarbakır and Silop Chief Public Prosecutors, opened in 2008 and 2009 respectively. In 2014, the family applied to the office of Silop Chief Public Prosecutor to demand an effective investigation; which is on-going under file number 2014/939.
