- Event description
Per case file of the investigation launched by the Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Ömer Savun was a married father of three living and working in the Bane (Ormaniçi) village of Şırnak’s Güçlükonak district Due to one of his brothers’ affiliation with the PKK, he was under constant harassment by the security forces and village guards; his house had been raided and he had been detained numerous times before his disappearance. On 7th May 1989, the mukhtar of his village informed him that he was being summoned to the Fındık Battalion Command and accompanied him there but returned to the village alone. When Ömer Savun’s family inquired about him at the Battalion Command, they were told that he had been summoned to the Güçlükonak Gendarmerie Station. Despite the family’s efforts, they could not find him. Ömer Savun has not been heard from or seen, nor have his bodily remains been found.

After the initial investigation was closed down in 1995 the family members of Ömer Savun applied to the Cizre Public Prosecutor in 2009 when they heard that some new investigation files were being opened regarding enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the region and requested that the perpetrators be identified and DNA tests run if any exhumations were to be done in the region. In 2012 Cizre Public Prosecutor Office prepared a summary of proceedings for 20 people who were allegedly killed or disappeared between 1993 and 1998 in the Güçlükonak district of Şırnak and sent it to Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor Office for further investigation. Subsequent developments in the investigation are unknown.
