Per court documents, born in the Cizre district of Şırnak, Makbule Ökden had opted to stay behind when her family moved to Ceyhan. In 1991, she was taken from her home by multiple men with guns; according to her son, who witnessed the incident, there was a police car in front of their house. Her family applied to the Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office to no avail. In 2009, the remains of two individuals, who had been shot to death, were discovered in a rural area of Cizre. Makbule Özden’s mother’s suspicions were confirmed after she applied to the Cizre Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for a DNA test, which revealed that one of the deceased individuals was indeed her daughter. The investigation is on-going under file number 2014/1859.
