- Event description
Per Yakay-Der’s book on enforced disappearances “Sımsıcaktı Elleri” (How snug were their hands) and his family’s testimony, 36 year-old Mmduh Ökmen was a married father of four living in the Sütlüköy (Ewina) village of Mardin’s Savur district, who was under pressure from the military authorities of the district to leave the village. On 20th April 1994, he was taken into custody by soldiers and on 6th May 1994 appeared before a judge, who released him at the end of the hearing. However, as he was about the exit the courthouse he was stopped by two gendarmes and a plain clothes man and driven off in a white Toros car. He has not been heard from or seen since then, nor have his bodily remains been found.
The investigation that was initiated with the efforts of his family was dropped in 2012 due to statute of limitations.
