Released from prison on March 29, 1995, Zeki Alabalık and Kemal Birlik (26) were picked up by their relatives Zübeyir Birlik (uncle of Kemal) and Abdülbaki Birlik (father of Kemal) from the gates. The four were not ever heard from again. Per reports of eyewitnesses, a military vehicle picked up the four men by force while walking around in the market place following their release from prison.

The remains of Zübeyir Birlik and Zeki Alabalık were discovered in 2013, inside a well in a church located in the Yurtderi village of Kızıltepe county in Mardin. The remains of Abdülbaki Birlik and Kemal Birlik have never been found.

After years of demands for justice, in 2015, a court case was opened against retired Colonel Hasan Atilla Uğur, Diyarbakır Province Gendarme Commander Colonel Eşref Hatipoğlu, Gendarme Commando Unit Commander Ahmet Boncuk, Sergeant Major Ünal Alkan and five village guards for the extrajudicial and arbitrary killing and the enforced disappearance of 22 individuals (including the four men) in Kızıltepe county of Mardin province between 1992-96.
