Per statement released by Cumartesi İnsanları on 30th June 2012 and Yakayder’s records, 45-year-old Mehmet Can Ayşin was the imam of his native village Kılıçlı (Mizage) in Diyarbakır’s Lice district, raising his nine children with his wife and tending to his self-owned field and livestock. On 8th May 1994 during a gendarmerie raid, all the inhabitants of the village were taken into custody. Women and children were released outside the village on the same night, while all the men were released in the following days with the exception of Mehmet Can Ayşin.
The daughter-in-law of Mehmet Ayşin applied to authorities to locate him to no avail.
The Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation after his wife made an official request on 12th September 2011 for exhumation of bodies discovered at a burial site.
As of 2014, the investigation is on-going.

Following a gendarmerie raid to the Kılıçlı (Mizage) village in Diyarbakır’s Lice district, all the inhabitants placed in custody were released with the exception of Mehmet Can Ayşin, prompting his family to search for him. Despite many attempts, the family did not receive any information about his whereabouts. On 12th September 2011, his wife applied to the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for the exhumation of the bodies recently discovered at an unmarked burial site, which initiated a legal process into her husband’s disappearance. During the legal proceedings, the case changed hands between different Prosecutor’s Offices. On 18th September 2014, the Lice Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office (file no. 2014/1086) issued a standing search warrant for Mehmet Can Ayşin and requested that the Lice District Gendarmerie Command inform the Prosecutor’s Office every three months until statute of limitations runs out.
