Per Yakay-Der records and press statement released on 24th April 2014 by Cumartesi İnsanları, 26-year-old Bedri Alağam (Algan) ran a coffee house near Yoğurt Pazarı in Diyarbakır. On the early morning of 25th January 1995, Bedri witnessed a murder as he was opening the coffee house. Around 10 am, he was detained with three other people by the police and then he was released. During the day, the police came back to the coffee house and asked some questions to Bedri regarding the murder he had witnessed. Then, at around 10:30 pm the same day, police came for the third time and detained him.
He has not been seen or heard from since then, nor have his bodily remains been found.
Bedri’s family got in touch with people who were kept in detention with Bedri. They told the family that Bedri had been severely tortured. Upon family’s request, the Human Rights Association investigated Bedri’s disappearance. Their investigation revealed that an official report of Bedri’s detention existed, however there were no official records of his release. The family applied to the European Court of Human Rights.
