- Event description
Per news articles published in the Özgür Gündem Newspaper between 14th-18th March 1994, 20th-22nd March 1994 and 24th-25th March 1994, Nazım Babaoğlu started working at the Urfa branch of Özgür Gündem Newspaper in 1992. After a news article detailing the rape of a teacher and her sister by village guards in Siverek from a local tribe appeared in the newspaper in March 1994, the staff started feeling nervous as strange men began lurking around the office building. On 12th March 1994, they received a call from their distributer in Siverek, insisting that they send a reporter to Siverek; upon which Nazım Babaoğlu was sent to Siverek and disappeared. Witnesses who came forward following his disappearance alleged that Nazım Babaoğlu had been kept and interrogated at the tribe leader’s house, known to be scene to such incidents ending in the death. Years later the distributer alleged that he had been kidnapped by the chief of the tribe and forced to make the phone call. The parents of Nazım Babaoğlu searched for him to no avail. He has never been heard from or seen, nor have his bodily remains been found.
