- Event description
Per indictment bill (2012/201) prepared by the Mardin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and news article published in the Cumhuriyet Newspaper on 17th December 2015, thirty-year-old Vejdin Avcıl was placed under custody during a gendarmerie raid on the Adakent village for allegedly aiding the PKK despite absence of any evidence. His family began to search for him right away; about a month and half later, they were informed by the Derik Prosecutor’s Office that Vejdi Avcıl had been killed by militants during a shoot-out between the gendarmerie and the PKK.
In 2008, as the family searched for witnesses, a person alleged that Vejdi Avcıl had been used by the gendarmerie during a raid on a PKK hide-out and had been killed during the shoot-out that had ensued. He had been registered as a militant and buried along with the three militants who had also died.
In 2012, Vejdi Avcıl’s disappearance was included in the indictment bill charging the then Derik District Gendarmerie Commander with the extrajudicial killing or disappearance of thirteen civilians.
In 2014, he was acquitted of all charges. In August 2015, the Court of Cassation affirmed the decision. The same day the Supreme Military Council promoted the commander from Brigadier General to Major General and appointed him as the Diyarbakır Regional Gendarmerie Commander.
