- Event description
Per plaintiff testimony; Mehmet Tan, a party executive in the HEP (People’s Labour Party) worked as a driver and customs trader in Silopi. Due to pressure from security forces, the family moved to Zaxo in Iraq.
On 15th December 1992, he went out to the marketplace, but did not return home.
His family searched for him everywhere; all, to no avail. Couple of months later, on 15th March 1993, his body was found in empty lot in Zaxo. He had been decapitated; but the family identified him from his clothing and a mole on his lower back.
The family took the body and buried Mehmet.
The family applied to the Silopi Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and an investigation was launched (file no. 1993/485), only to be closed in August 2008 for statute of limitation. In January 2009, following Mehmet’s Tan’s son’s request, his file was merged with the investigation (file no. 2008/3151) into allegations regarding burial of JİTEM victims at BOTAŞ facility sites and pits in Silopi, Şırnak. The investigation is on-going.
