- Event description
Construction worker Abdulgani Dağ was detained on the Mardin-Nusaybin highway sometime in July, 1994 and was not heard from again, nor was his body found later.
Dağ had been receiving threats from the gendarme and soldiers, and they frequently raided his house while his brothers and sisters were also threatened. Eventually, unable to stand the threats any longer, the family moved to Mardin.
While on the road between Mardin and Nusaybin, the police stopped the minibus he had been riding and he was detained along with three other passengers. Despite the existence of witness accounts, the family was denied the fact that he was taken into custody. Years later, the officials told the family that he had been a member of the PKK and was killed in an armed clash on 14th of July 1994 with two other militants. There was only the autopsy report in his investigation file which was closed down in 1998 with a decision of non-prosecution and all formal claims by the family’s lawyer to learn where he was buried was overruled.
