Per news article published on 16th September 2012 in the Cumhuriyet Newspaper and press statement released by Cumartesi İnsanları on 27th April 2012, Nurettin Öztürk was active in revolutionary parties with a history of imprisonment and was living in Sweden when the 12 September coup took place in 1980. He returned to Turkey in 1983 and disappeared after he was arrested in Ankara April 1984. Per witness accounts, he could be heard screaming during the first three days of his arrest, after which the screams stopped, and a body was carried out of the chamber. Despite his mother’s many attempts to find him, his arrest was constantly denied by authorities. He has not been heard from or seen, nor have his bodily remains been found.

On 3rd March 2011, a complaint was filed by twelve plaintiffs at the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the disappearance, death or extrajudicial killing of their relatives, including Nurettin Öztürk, following the coup of 12th September 1980. In the complaint, it was emphasized that statute of limitations cannot apply to such crimes against humanity. However, the investigation was dismissed in 2014, as well as the appeal that was subsequently filed.
